Yard Storage

What is Yard Storage in Shipping?

Yard storage refers to the temporary holding of shipping containers or trailers in a secure yard or terminal after they’ve been unloaded from a vessel, train, or truck—but before they’re picked up or delivered. These storage yards are typically located near ports, rail ramps, or distribution centers.

This storage helps manage overflow cargo, delays in delivery, or missed pickup windows—but extra fees may apply when containers sit too long.

When is It Used?

  • Waiting for customs clearance
  • Delays in pickup or delivery scheduling
  • Congestion at distribution centers or warehouses
  • As temporary holding after port demurrage time expires

Who Charges Yard Storage Fees?

  • Drayage carriers
  • Terminal operators
  • 3PLs or warehouse providers

Fees are usually daily and depend on the location and container size.

Example in Practice

A container is picked up from the Port of Long Beach, but the consignee’s warehouse isn’t ready to receive it. The drayage carrier places it in a nearby yard, where yard storage fees of $50 per day begin after 48 hours.
