Transloading

What is Transloading?

Transloading is the process of moving cargo from one mode of transportation to another during its journey. This often happens when goods are shipped long distances using multiple types of transport—like switching from ocean to truck, or rail to truck.

It helps move freight more efficiently and is commonly used in international shipping, intermodal logistics, and last-mile delivery.

When Is Transloading Used?

  • When a container arrives at a port and goods need to be trucked inland
  • To combine or split shipments for better delivery routes
  • When switching between rail and truck for cost savings
  • To avoid delays or adjust for port congestion

Example of Transloading in Practice

A shipment arrives in Los Angeles by ocean container. The goods are unloaded at a warehouse and loaded onto several trucks going to different cities. This transfer from container to truck is transloading.
