New Regulations Affecting Section 232 Take Effect on April 6
- April 3, 2026
On April 2, 2026, President Trump signed a proclamation adjusting Section 232 tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper. The new rates take effect at 12:01 a.m. ET on April 6. Here’s a quick summary of what changes:
- Articles made entirely (or almost entirely) of aluminum, steel, or copper (e.g., steel coils, aluminum sheet) are subject to a 50% tariff.
- Derivative articles substantially made of steel, aluminum, or copper are subject to a 25% tariff.
- Certain metal-intensive industrial and electrical grid equipment are subject to a 15% tariff (through 2027)
- Products made abroad using entirely American steel, aluminum, or copper are subject to a 10% tariff.
- Products containing 15% or less steel, aluminum, or copper are no longer subject to Section 232 tariffs
The big change? All tariffs will now be assessed on the full value of imported goods.
